Antique French domed steamer trunk with paper lined original interior and original label. This trunk has beautifully woven thick canvas in a design first made by Louis Vuitton of Paris in 1872, which they called the Rayee pattern. A few other trunk makers had their own version, but very few are found. Striped canvas was only ever purchased by the elite and was a very expensive and luxury purchase. The canvas is woven like tapestry and is very special today. This trunk has remnants of several vintage travel stickers which increase it’s historical value.
The label on the inside of the lid reads “Fabrique d'Articles de Voyage T. Wierzbicki Commandes. Reparations, Exchange. Geneve 11, Quai des Bergues, 11”
It likely dates from the early to mid 1800s. Domed trunks date from the early 1800s; the flat top steamer trunk was introduced later by Louis Vuitton.
The trunk is missing one of the leather handles as well as the inside tray and the key.
