This 4 gallon stoneware moonshine jug has a beautiful salt glaze which gives it a wonderful orange peel texture and subtle color variations across its surface. Dating from the mid 1800s, it has unusual high relief glaze drips that would have occurred during the kiln firing process. We especially love its silhouette, known as a "beehive" shape and its elephant ear handle.
The cobalt design (a sought-after feature) on the front of the jug identifies it as a piece by Hamilton & Jones, a pottery operation out of Greensboro, PA from the mid 1800s to the turn of the century. In the 19th century, the reputation of Hamilton & Jones pottery was widespread and their pieces continue to be prized by collectors. A devastating fire in 1897 destroyed the plant and forced the business to close its doors permanently. This historic jug is a truly special piece!
